Grouper
Many varieties of Grouper are caught in the waters off Port
Canaveral. Gag Grouper, more commonly known as Grays, are
the main Grouper sought after by fishermen reaching sizes
topping more than forty pounds. Other Groupers often caught
are Red, Scamp, and Warsaw. Rarely seen by divers and even
more rarely caught is the Goliath Grouper. The Goliath Grouper
may reach sizes of several hundred pounds; this species of
Grouper is a site to see. However, they are protected by
law and must be released unharmed if caught.
Other Grouper rarely caught off Canaveral but are more common
in other parts of Florida are Yellowfin, Black, Nassau and
Snowy.
Florida record for the Goliath Grouper is 680 pounds.
