Tuna
The most common
species of Tuna caught off Florida’s
waters are Blackfin and Yellowfin. These fish are known for
their backbreaking fights, and are commonly caught throughout
the Bahamas, and Caribbean as well as Florida.
Yellowfin: Off the Coast Port Canaveral, Yellowfins are
targeted from 60 to 100 miles offshore. Trolling lures at
speeds reaching 15 knots, multiple hook-ups are common. Large
packs of birds are a tell-tale sign the tuna are working
schools of baitfish and finding these birds is the key to
finding Yellowfin tuna.
Blackfin: Blackfin Tuna can be caught much closer to shore
with fishermen only needing to go 20 or 30 miles. These fish
are also caught trolling; however, a better method off the
East Coast of Florida is chumming around shrimp boats that
are anchored. The unwanted by-catch from these shrimpers
often ignites a feeding frenzy of Tuna and Bonita.
